From the main menu, tap "Remove Ads": a one-time purchase that removes banners and interstitials for good.
This can happen after switching phones or reinstalling the app. From the main menu, tap "Restore Purchases" at the bottom of the screen: the app will verify your purchase with Apple and hide ads again.
Go back to the main menu and try starting or joining a new match. If the host left, they'll simply need to invite you again.
